    The Phoenix Drone: An Open-Source Dual-Rotor Tail-Sitter Platform for Research and Education

    In this paper, we introduce the Phoenix drone: the first completely open-source tail-sitter micro aerial vehicle (MAV) platform. The vehicle has a highly versatile, dual-rotor design and is engineered to be low-cost and easily extensible/modifiable. Our open-source release includes all of the design documents, software resources, and simulation tools needed to build and fly a high-performance tail-sitter for research and educational purposes. The drone has been developed for precision flight with a high degree of control authority. Our design methodology included extensive testing and characterization of the aerodynamic properties of the vehicle. The platform incorporates many off-the-shelf components and 3D-printed parts, in order to keep the cost down. Nonetheless, the paper includes results from flight trials which demonstrate that the vehicle is capable of very stable hovering and accurate trajectory tracking. Our hope is that the open-source Phoenix reference design will be useful to both researchers and educators.     Future directions in ventilator-induced lung injury associated cognitive impairment: a new sight

    Mechanical ventilation is a widely used short-term life support technique, but an accompanying adverse consequence can be pulmonary damage which is called ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI). Mechanical ventilation can potentially affect the central nervous system and lead to long-term cognitive impairment. In recent years, many studies revealed that VILI, as a common lung injury, may be involved in the central pathogenesis of cognitive impairment by inducing hypoxia, inflammation, and changes in neural pathways. In addition, VILI has received attention in affecting the treatment of cognitive impairment and provides new insights into individualized therapy. The combination of lung protective ventilation and drug therapy can overcome the inevitable problems of poor prognosis from a new perspective. In this review, we summarized VILI and non-VILI factors as risk factors for cognitive impairment and concluded the latest mechanisms. Moreover, we retrospectively explored the role of improving VILI in cognitive impairment treatment. This work contributes to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of VILI-induced cognitive impairment and may provide future direction for the treatment and prognosis of cognitive impairment

    IncidencePrevalence:An R package to calculate population-level incidence rates and prevalence using the OMOP common data model

    Purpose: Real-world data (RWD) offers a valuable resource for generating population-level disease epidemiology metrics. We aimed to develop a well-tested and user-friendly R package to compute incidence rates and prevalence in data mapped to the observational medical outcomes partnership (OMOP) common data model (CDM). Materials and Methods: We created IncidencePrevalence, an R package to support the analysis of population-level incidence rates and point- and period-prevalence in OMOP-formatted data. On top of unit testing, we assessed the face validity of the package. To do so, we calculated incidence rates of COVID-19 using RWD from Spain (SIDIAP) and the United Kingdom (CPRD Aurum), and replicated two previously published studies using data from the Netherlands (IPCI) and the United Kingdom (CPRD Gold). We compared the obtained results to those previously published, and measured execution times by running a benchmark analysis across databases. Results: IncidencePrevalence achieved high agreement to previously published data in CPRD Gold and IPCI, and showed good performance across databases. For COVID-19, incidence calculated by the package was similar to public data after the first-wave of the pandemic. Conclusion: For data mapped to the OMOP CDM, the IncidencePrevalence R package can support descriptive epidemiological research. It enables reliable estimation of incidence and prevalence from large real-world data sets. It represents a simple, but extendable, analytical framework to generate estimates in a reproducible and timely manner.</p

    Purification, characterization and probiotic proliferation effect of exopolysaccharides produced by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum HDC-01 isolated from sauerkraut

    In this study, an exopolysaccharide (EPS)-producing strain of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum HDC-01 was isolated from sauerkraut, and the structure, properties and biological activity of the studied EPS were assessed. The molecular weight of the isolated EPS is 2.505 × 106 Da. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) results showed that the EPS was composed of glucose/glucopyranose subunits linked by an α-(1 → 6) glycosidic bond and contained an α-(1 → 3) branching structure. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed the amorphous nature of the EPS. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed that the isolated EPS had a smooth and compact surface with several protrusions of varying lengths and irregularly shaped material. Moreover, the studied EPS showed good thermal stability, water holding capacity, and milk coagulation ability and promoted the growth of probiotics. L. plantarum EPS may be used as prebiotics in the fields of food and medicine

    The efficacy of microsurgery in the treatment of cerebral aneurysm rupture and its effect on NF-kappa B, MCP-1 and MMP-9

    The clinical efficacy of microsurgical neck clipping for the treatment of cerebral aneurysm rupture and its effect on serum nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated beta cells (NF-kappa B), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and matrix metalloproteinase-9-9 (MMP-9-9) levels were investigated. A total of 56 patients with first occurrence of cerebral aneurysm rupture were enrolled from June 2015 to June 2016. These patients were divided into control (25 patients) and observation groups (31 patients) according to treatment received. The patients in the control group were treated with interventional embolization and extraventricular drainage, while the patients in the observation group were treated with microsurgical neck clipping. Serum NF-kappa B, MCP-1 and MMP-9-9 levels were measured by ELISA prior to the operation and at 6 h post-operation. Clinical effects were compared at the 6-month follow-up. There was no significant difference in the success rate of the operation between the two groups (p>0.05). The incidence of complications in the observation group was significantly lower than that in the control group (p<0.05). The Glasgow Outcome Scale score was significantly improved in the observation group (p<0.05) compared with the control group. Serum NF-kappa B, MMP-9-9 and MCP-1 were significantly decreased in both groups at 6 and 24 h after operation, but the observational group showed significantly lower levels for all three proteins than the control group (p<0.05). The application of early microsurgical neck clipping for the treatment of cerebral aneurysm rupture can reduce complications and improve clinical prognosis, and this may be related to a decrease in serum inflammatory response-related factors (NF-kappa B and MCP-1) and MMP-9-9

    Cross-modal effect of music and paintings in binocular rivalry

    Music has the power to influence our perception and mood through its rich hierarchical information and intense emotion. However, little is known about how music affects visual awareness in aesthetic scenes. To address this question, we presented participants with traditional Chinese paintings differing in aesthetic emotion (bleak vs. vivid) or a pair of red-green patches during the binocular rivalry task, while they listened to either sad or lively Chinese folk music (played with erhu or flute) or no music. Results revealed a significant top-down modulation of musical aesthetic emotion on binocular rivalry. Sad music increased the average dominance duration and predominance score of bleak paintings. Additionally, lively music with a faster tempo accelerated the switch rate of both paintings and patches. Notably, these effects were interdependent and associated with individuals’ sensitivity to musical reward. Overall, our findings support the hierarchical predictive coding model, which involves both the top-down modulation of musical aesthetic emotion and the bottom-up entrainment of musical tempo in shaping visual awareness of paintings
